Description
A non-kosher pride of the Jewish-Italian quarter of the Eternal City, this spot has been famous since 1844 for its specialty, carciofi alla giudia, or artichokes, pressed flat, and quickly deep-fried; the humble vegetable emerges golden brown, the leaves crisp, and the heart sweet and soft. The restaurant is operated by a vigorous and competent young couple, who have improved it so dramatically that now at nearly every meal the house is full. No-nonsense, brusque service, noisy and bustling; simple, old-fashioned furnishings.
