Carnevale

In mid-February, a week and a half before Ash Wednesday, revelers don traditional porcelain masks and costumes and dance in the streets (all rather staid compared to Rio or New Orleans). The well-heeled and well-connected attend fancy balls, but everyone can join in free festivities in the piazza San Marco.
