Burano

Burano is a charming island, with canals and narrow streets, where the inhabitants make their living as lacemakers and fishermen. The 16th-century church of San Mattino has an early painting by Tiepolo, The Crucifixion. Take along a picnic lunch and some extra lire if you expect to purchase some of the lace for which the island is famous. To reach Burano from Venice, take a No. 5 vaporetto from riva degli Schiavoni. Get off at Fondamente Nuove; then take the boat called Line 12 and marked "Burano."
