Venice Film Festival

The Venice Film Festival is the world's oldest, and the Continent's second largest (next to Cannes). The festival has always drawn the best of European cinema, and has recently drawn more and more attention from U.S. directors; the festival's top prize, the Golden Lion, is one of the film industry's major plums. For spectators, the Venice festival is not only a good place to see new major films, it's also a great place to see actors, for in carless Venice, even the biggest stars have to walk the streets and ride the vaporetti like anyone else.

The festival is held out on the Lido, at the Astra Cinema and the Palazzo del Cinema, in August and September. Tickets for films are sold only on the day of performance, and for popular flicks they can be hard to come by. Always try to pick up tickets early in the day.
