San Zaccaria

The church of San Zaccaria was noted during the 16th century for the riotous behavior of the nuns at the adjoining Benedictine convent. However, today the church is known for Bellini's altarpiece Madonna and Saints, one of the greatest works of the early Renaissance. Despite the subtlety of the painting, it can hold your attention from across the church, especially when the afternoon sun plays across its surface. Closer, its stillness and extraordinary light are mesmerizing. The carved pilasters of the frame, echoed in the painting, draw you closer yet, but just enough to gaze more intently at the scene before you.
