Scuola San Giórgio degli Schiavoni

By the 15 century, so many Dalmatians were living in Venice that Venetian authorities allowed the Slavs to build their own scuola (confraternity). Vittore Carpaccio was hired to paint friezes of their patron saints along the main floor of the building. Carpaccio captures the Venice of his time in an almost anecdotal style, notable for the uniquely Venetian light that infuses each scene. The paintings of the lives of the saints are extremely charming and full of period detail, and amply repay a visit. Especially notable is the painting St. George Slaying the Dragon.
