There is a point during any visit to Venice when you need to escape it. That's the best time to cruise its canals and lagoon. The most relaxing trip is to the island of Torcello. The easiest is right out from the piazzetta San Marco to one or more of the three Palladian churches on the west side of the Giudecca Canal. The most disconcerting, because of the sudden rediscovery of car traffic, is to the Lido. If you want to sun yourself at the beaches of the Lido (swimming is not particularly recommended because of pollution), take the No. 1 or more direct No. 6 vaporetto from riva degli Schiavoni to piazzalle Elisabetta (15–20 minutes), where bus A runs on the lungamare to the beaches and casino (five minutes).
