Hotels (Overview)

Hotels tend to cluster primarily into two price groups—very expensive, around 360,000 lire and up (US$230) and moderate, around 140,000-220,000 lire ($90–140). All tend to be pricier than their equivalents elsewhere, especially when you add the price of the breakfast that is invariably included. The upper-end hotels can outstrip even Milan in cost. The moderately priced category includes a number of palazzi that have been renovated into intimate inns, many with peaceful gardens.

You would be wise to reserve at least two months in advance, especially at the smaller hotels, during the high season (April to mid-November, Christmas, and Carnevale). Surprisingly, you can be lucky mid-July through August, when the inundation of day trippers chases out the overnight tourist. Many hotels officially lower their rates then as well as in the off-season.
