Description
This spot sprang to life way back in 1720, and Casanova played here. It offers six little plush-velvet rooms, each with its own entrance, plus seven rows of outside tables. A seasonal band can be heard by anybody in the entire square from April to October. The pick of the esplanade for wine, hors d'oeuvres, and cheer.

In the evenings, this prime spot lures the coffee-and-cognac crowd. There are sprawling sidewalk tables accommodating perhaps 150; gay piano, harmonica, and violin music; and an indoor Victorian bar. Drinks start at 17,000 lire (US$11), so make sure it's a long one; there's a 20 percent surcharge for a table on the square when musicians play. For non-imbibers, an espresso at 4,500 lire (US$3) is a little lighter on the pocketbook. Delightful in season, but you pay plenty for the location.
