Health & Safety

Venice is one of the safest cities in Europe, with very little threat to physical harm. Wandering the canals and streets after dark is not only usually free of risk, it's practically a part of life; after all, there are no cars here to whisk people around.

As elsewhere in Italy, pickpockets and petty thievery is common. Be careful in crowds, especially at the train station and at Piazza San Marco, and when jostling to get onto boats. Be careful when approached by crowds of children who ask for money or try to touch you: Forget your humanitarian impulses, for they're after your valuables.
