Each pud requires some disk space, from about 50KB to 1MB, if installed. Recommended: 486 or higher CPU, 600K Conventional RAM, 4x CD-ROM Drive, Accelerated SVGA Video Card, DOS 6.0 or higher. You also need the registered version of Warcraft II: The Tides of Darkness from Blizzard Entertainment. Installing The Menu Program --------------------------- The menu program does not need to be installed. Simply run it from the CD-ROM drive. The puds, on the other hand, will in most cases be required to be installed on the particular game directory. You can use the menu program, or manually copy the files. Video Problems -------------- The menu program use the 640x480x256 color video resolution, which is one of the SVGA (SuperVGA) video resolutions. In order to run the menu program, your video card has to support 640x480x256 colors. If your video card has one of the following chipset (see the manual for your video card), then the menu program will work with your video card. Avance Logic 2000 series (27) Ahead A (2) Ahead B (3) ARK Logic 1000/2000 (28) ATI 18800 (4) ATI 18800-1 (5) ATI 28800/38800 (6) ATI 68800 (mach32) (29) ATI 88800 (mach64) (30) Chips & Technologies 64000/65500 series (31) Chips & Technologies 82c451/455/456/457 (7) Chips & Technologies 82c452 (8) Chips & Technologies 82c450/453 (9) Cirrus Logic 5400 series (20) Cirrus Logic 6400 series (26) Genoa 6000 series (10) NCR 77C22/77C32 (22) Oak OTI-067 (11) Oak OTI-077 (23) Oak OTI-087 (24) Paradise PVGA1a (12) Paradise WD90C00/WD90C10 (13) Paradise WD90C11/30/31/33 (14) Realtek 3100 series (32) S3 (21) Trident 8800 (15) Trident 8900/9000 (16) Tseng ET3000 (17) Tseng ET4000 (18) Video7 (19) You can specify which chipset to use when you run the menu program by putting the number inside the brackets above for the specified card on the menu program command line. (E.g. type "menu 12" to specify the Paradise PVGA1a chipset.) If a VESA driver is loaded, the menu program will use it if it doesn't find a supported chipset. Check your video card manual to see if it has VESA support and how to setup the VESA driver for it. If you are not sure about which chipset your video card has, or if you don't know if it has VESA support, or if your video card has one of the above chipsets but the menu program still doesn't work, follow these steps to install the Universal VESA Bios Extension (UniVBE) driver (Note: The UniVBE program is shareware. If you plan to use it beyond the evaluation period, please register it.): 1) Change to the CD-ROM drive. (e.g. type "d:" at the DOS prompt, where "d" is your CD-ROM drive letter); 2) Change to the SciTech Display Doctor directory (e.g. type "cd \sdd"); 3) Type "install" and follow the directions. 4) Once it is installed, change to the SciTech Display Doctor directory (e.g. type "c:", then type "cd \sdd53"); 5) Type "univbe" to install the UniVBE driver. Follow the directions. 6) To add the driver to your autoexec.bat file, type "edit c:\autoexec.bat". Go to the bottom of the file, and add the following line: c:\sdd53\univbe.exe Note: if you are low in conventional memory (type "mem" at the DOS command line to see how much memory you have), you can loadhigh the UniVBE driver by adding "lh" to the above line: lh c:\sdd53\univbe.exe Note: Change the "c:\sdd53" to the directory where you installed the SciTech Display Doctor. 7) If the UniVBE driver has not been added to the autoexec.bat file, you need to switch to the SciTech Display Doctor directory (e.g. "c:\sdd53") and run the UniVBE program ("univbe.exe") before running the menu program. 8) When you run the menu program, specify "1" as the command line argument (e.g. type "menu 1"). Running The Menu Program ------------------------ Under DOS: 1) Change to the CD-ROM drive (e.g. "d:") 2) Change to the root directory if not there (e.g. "cd \") 3) run "menu.exe" Under Windows 3.x/95/NT: 1) Open File Manager or Windows Explorer 2) Switch to the CD-ROM drive (select it from the drive list or click its icon on the toolbar) 3) Double click on the menu.exe file Note: You may need to run a VESA or the UniVBE driver (see above under "Video Problems") in order for the menu program to work. You may need to run in a DOS prompt (full screen recommended) in order to run the UniVBE driver and the menu program. You do not need to use a mouse, but it is recommended. Menu Program Sounds ------------------- The menu program requires a Sound Blaster or compatible sound card in order to play the sounds. If you do not have a Sound Blaster or compatible sound card, or the menu program crashes because your sound card is not setup properly, you can run the menu program without sounds by using the /s option in the command line: menu.exe /s This will turn off all sounds. Using The Menu Program ---------------------- The menu program is a DOS program, so for best performance under Windows, run it at full-screen (press alt-enter to switch from/to full-screen). A logo will be played or displayed, then the main screen will show up. Here, you can choose to go to the puds list, or view some information about the menu program. After selecting the Warcraft II logo, you will be shown the list screen, which shows the Warcraft II puds available, along with a description, the author information, the date the pud was created, and instructions for how to use the pud. You can either manually copy the files from the directory listed to the game directory, or click on the install button to have the menu program do it for you. The install program will rename any existing files in the destination directory that have the same name as the ones being installed. Once you have copied the files you want, exit the menu program, start the game and follow the instructions that were provided in the menu program for the specific pud file. You have to manually uninstall puds by deleting the directory or files where they are installed. Files with a number extension in their name (e.g. war2.001) are files that were renamed when a pud was installed because of a file name conflict. Simply rename the file to it's previous extension. (I.e. if the file you deleted was named war2.exe, and there is a war2.001, then rename war2.001 to war2.exe.) You can click on the help button at any time if you are having problems with the menu program. How to Use the Warcraft II Scenarios ----------------------------------- Each pud level (scenario) must be put into the Warcraft 2 directory, by default it is c:\war2. If a scenario already exists with the same name, please backup it up first (by renaming it) before copying the new scenario. Once you start Warcraft 2, select either Single Player or Multi Player. If you selected Single Player, select "Custom Scenario" from the menu. Then select "Select Scenario" and in the Type group, select "Custom Scenario". Select the scenario you copied from the list and click on OK. Then select "Start Game" to play the scenario. Each scenario is copyright of the author. Warcraft II is copyright of Blizzard Entertainment. You can contact Blizzard Entertainment at: Phone: (714) 955-1382 Online: support@blizzard.com WebSite: http://www.blizzard.com None of the puds included on this CD are supported or were developed by Blizzard Entertainment.
