PETER THE GREAT (PETER I) (1672 - 1725) Tsar of Russia. He succeded to the throne in 1682 on the death of his brother and took control of the government in 1689. He fought and beat the Turks in 1696 - after which he made several trips to Europe studying Western styles and techniques most of which he introduced into Russia - he was determined to Europeanise Russia. He built a new capital, St.Petersburg.
