KU KLUX KLAN The Ku Klux Klan came into being immediately after the end of the American Civil War at first as a sort of Southern resistance movement but soon changed into an avowdly racist society trying to preserve the segregationist lifestyle of the old South. The Klan achieved much success but also a lot of notoriety because of it's often brutal methods. The Klan faded into insignificance in the 1880's. In the early 1920's, the Klan was relaunched and achieved great success mostly in the Southern States but also throughout the rest of the USA. However with the advent of WW2, the Ku Klux Klan again faded into insignificance. The start of the "Civil Rights" movement in the 1960's saw a rebirth of the Klan in opposition and it is still active today, although splintered and small compared to it's zenith in the 1920's.
