GLADIATORS
                              
Gladiators were professional fighters, recruited mainly from slaves, criminals
and prisoners of war, who fought to the death for the entertainment of the
ancient Romans. The custom, which originated in the practice of slaughtering
slaves on a chieftain's grave was introduced into Rome from Erutria in 264BC
and went on until the 5th Century AD.
