============================== ST. HELENA ============================== St. Helena is an isolated rectangular, slab sided island of old volcanic rocks, well off the main line of the Mid- Atlantic Ridge. A tableland deeply dissected by valleys, it has steep cliffs and ridges, and there is relatively little flat ground available. Standing in the trade winds, St. Helena has a cool tropical maritime climate, dry at sea level but moist enough for limited farming on the heights. Although potatoes and other vegetables are grown, and cattle, sheep and goats raised, the island is heavily dependent on subsidies from the UK. Flax, lace and rope making are the chief industries. It is the administrative centre for six of the UK's South Atlantic islands. Area (Sq.
